# Introduction

The SatLayer Protocol introduces the new economy, built on Bitcoin. 

By making Bitcoin programmable, SatLayer transforms BTC from a passive store of value into the foundation of a global reserve asset for a new, non-USD financial system.

At the center of this transformation lies the **SLAY token**. SLAY is designed to:

* Boost Bitcoin’s liquidity efficiency,
* Strengthen crypto-economic security, and
* Empower the community to govern SatLayer’s long-term trajectory.
